Primary Election Postponed to June 2 due to COVID-19

Governor Larry Hogan has announced that Maryland’s primary election has been postponed to June 2, 2020. It was originally scheduled for April 28, but is being pushed back to limit the spread of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Early voting has been pushed back accordingly, and will be held from May 21-May 28 between 10:00am and 8:00pm. However, the deadline to change party affiliation remains unchanged, on April 7. As Maryland holds closed primaries, only registered Democrats may vote in the Democratic primary, and only registered Republicans may vote in the Republican primary.

The special election in the 7th Congressional district will still be held on April 28, but will be conducted by mail-in ballot.

With an extended primary season comes extended campaign finance reporting deadlines. According to the Board of Elections reporting schedule, the first pre-primary report (reflecting activity between January 9 and April 21) will be due on April 28. The second pre-primary report (reflecting activity between April 27 and May 17) will be due on May 22.
