Remembering George Owings III

George W. Owings, III, a former state Delegate and later Secretary of the Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs, passed away on October 31, 2023, at the age of 78.

Owings had a profound and lasting impact throughout the state of Maryland. He faithfully represented his native Calvert County in the House of Delegates from 1988 until he was appointed by then-Governor Bob Ehrlich to assume the leadership of the Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs in 2004. Owings continued to serve in this pivotal role throughout the entirety of Governor Ehrlich’s term. Subsequently, he was re-appointed by Governor Larry Hogan in 2015 and continued to steer the department throughout Hogan’s eight-year tenure as governor.
