Bradshaw and Price Out in Dorchester County

It appears that two county councilmen have been defeated in the primary elections this week in Dorchester County, home of Cambridge and Chesapeake crab country. Turnout was significantly down from the 2014 primaries, with almost 1,000 less voters. This low turnout may have led to some election night surprises.

Map of Dorchester’s five county council districts

District 1 (Satterfield-R)

Democrat: Jay Newcomb 64.2%, Betsy Hughes 35.8%. Newcomb represented this district until 2014, when Republican Don Satterfield beat him by 28 votes.

Republican: Don Satterfield was unopposed.

District 2 (Nichols-D)

Democrat: William Nichols was unopposed. He’ll also be unopposed in November, as no Republicans filed to challenge him.

District 3 (Travers-D)

Democrat: Ricky Travers was unopposed. He’ll also be unopposed in November, as no Republicans filed to challenge him.

District 4 (Price-R)

Republican: Lenny Pfeffer 52.1%, Rick Price 35.0%, William Neil Windsor 12.9%. Price beat Pfeffer in 2014, when Pfeffer was a Democrat, 53-47%. Pfeffer switched parties and has defeated Price convincingly. He’ll be unopposed in November, as no Democrats filed to challenge him.

District 5 (Bradshaw-R)

Republican: Libby Handley Nagel 58.4%, Thomas Bradshaw 41.6%. The percentage spread (16 points) gives a false picture of the real difference in this race: 100 votes. Still, Bradshaw becomes the second council incumbent unseated this week. Nagel will be unopposed in November, as no Democrats filed to challenge her.
